More about me

I’m 44, and am a proud Australian.

I love movies and TV and sport and reading and photography and now I am trying to become a better writer and this is where writing articles comes into it.

So if you have time and want to come on my journey to become a better writer, then welcome aboard.

This is my favourite post I have written.  It is about the day my second child decided to come into the world early and I was on the other side of the country.  Did I make it in time?  You’ll have to read it to find out.  Click here and please leave a comment if you liked it.

Comments Policy

I welcome comments on all of my posts.  While all opinions are valued here, I would appreciate it if you would refrain from making comments that insult myself and other commentators. I reserve the right to moderate any comments that do not offer a constructive argument.

Hi, I just read your older posts about your time in the ADF. It was a really interesting and well written piece. I’m currently deciding to join and wanted to find out more regarding the Rookies and more precisely their Shaving Routine. Can you recall what was their method and also was it permitted to shave the night before, rather than first thing in the morning?

    • Hi mate

Gee it was a long time ago and policies change but shaving the night before or getting up early was not allowed. In the first part of training we had to use the old style razor not the disposables. It was over 20 years ago so maybe it has changed.

      Good luck!

Hey Jack, I might been in your intact. I may have been one of the ‘older 3’. I was 29 years old at the time.

    • Hi Ken. I was there in January 1990 and marched out in April. Sgt Vennell was in charge. I forget the rest of the Corporals and LT. Your name does ring a bell. I legally changed my name from James Smith which is what I was known as then.

Any of that ring a bell?

Gidday Jack, Sgt Vennel sure does and I ran into him a couple of years later at Pucka. I looked at one photo you posted at march out, you do look familer but a lot younger!!! I was in the last room on the right going out the back stairs. I got out in November 1994. Believe me I also had problems. Long time ago now but. All the best mate, Ken.
